Michael George Haynes, known to the world as Michael Prophet passed away from cardiac arrest at home on Saturday 16th December 2017.
Michael Prophet was born in Jamaica in 1957. He was a Jamaican roots reggae singer known for his “crying” tenor vocal style, whose recording career began in 1977.
Michael Prophet’s first recordings were for producer Yabby You in 1977, his first single “Praise You Jah Jah”, He cites Bob Andy as his main influence as a singer. He had his first Jamaican hit with a version of The Heptones‘ “Fight It To The Top”. His 1980 album Serious Reasoning was released by Island Records in the United Kingdom, establishing his reputation internationally. After working with Yabby You, he also recorded for Henry “Junjo” Lawes, adapting to the prevailing dancehall sound and having his biggest hit with “Gunman”. During the first half of the 1980s he recorded for producers such as Don Mais, Al Campbell, Sugar Minott, Winston “Niney” Holness, and Winston Riley, cementing his status as one of Jamaica’s most popular singers. After living in Miami, he moved to England, where he recorded “Your Love” with Ricky Tuffy, which reached number one in the UK reggae chart in 1990.
Michael Prophet’s talent took him all around the world performing in front of tens of thousands of people. Michaels spirit was so strong that he would fill any room that he entered. As a close friend of Blujeanz Artist General Saint, the impact of his passing feels like we have all lost a great friend.
General Saint said “Prophet was always a positive driving force throughout my career. He always encouraged me to continue to strive and push my music forward, I can’t believe he has gone”.
